Classical Composition III: Chreia & Maxim

Classical Composition III: Chreia & Maxim

Suggested Grades: 6th-8th grade (some 9th graders as well)

This is the third course in classical composition (progymnasmata). This is a method of how to teach writing that has been used for centuries until just recently.

Years offered (alternates): 2022-2023 & 2024-2025

Prerequisites: Classical Composition II

In Classical Composition II: Chreia & Maxim, the children will move on from recreating stories like the did in CC1 & CC2, and expand their writing abilities by learning the "Heads of Development" as they work through a chreia (a saying by a famous figure) or a maxim (a proverb).

The 8 Heads of Development are Encomium, Paraphrase, Cause, Converse, Analogy, Example, Testimony, and Epilogue.

This is the year, where you will see your child's writing skyrocket as they begin to understand how to put together a strong paper.

Two weeks are spent on each lesson. We work on the harder lessons in class, leaving the easier lessons for at home. At the end of each lesson, the children read their final re-writes in class which also helps them become more comfortable with oral presentations and speaking.
